if you have Netscape 4.02 or later, the new version of the Java map-maker will let you save GIF's!
If not, the original version is still on this page.
Here's the start of a Java mapmaker. Frankly, we can't figure out how to get the map out of Java and back to you. Feel free to poke around, but if you want a copy of your map, you'll have to have a "screen capture" program and snap a copy from your web browser. (Please don't ask us how to do this.)
The Fetch Map button doesn't work!!!
You need Netscape 2.05 or later (or the equivalent) to use this application. Win16 versions will not do ...
Other useful usage notes ...
Abstract/Hexes: Abstract mapping mode drops circular plops for terrain types ... I like using it when I start a map to prevent me from worrying about details when staring at a blank canvas ... Try placing your water, mountains, hills and forests in Abstract Mode and then switch over to Hex Mode to finish the map. (You can switch back and forth between the two modes without loosing and data.)
Labels: To place text on the map, select Terrain type "Label". When you click on the map, the text in the Label: edit box will be draw on the map. The Placement Scale setting determines the size of the text.
Rivers and Roads: Rivers and roads meander from one point to the next. Once a river or road is started, a "Start another" button appear that can be used to start another road segment or river tributary.
Editing: "New" erases the map; "Undo" erases the last feature added. "New" cannot be undone and is conveniently near teh Undo button to make mistakes easy ...
Fetching the map: The "Fetch Map" button does not work!
Limits: The map has a limit of about 200 clicks.
